As a school we use a 'mixed bag' approach to phonics, taken the best bits of different schemes, theories and research. We have a very structured plan in school to progress children through a range of stages, this ensures children become competent readers and writers.
As part of this 'mixed bag' approach we use the colour codes monsters from the 'Monster Phonics' scheme to help children engage and remember different phoneme (sounds) etc. This video may help explain this:
